Snorkelling
Snorkelling is best done during the dry season. This should be between the months of March and September. An endless parade of multi-hued marine life from corals and urchins to turtles, rays, sharks and a stunning variety of tropical fish reward divers. Wary snorkellers can enjoy clear water in the warm security of shallow reefs if they are too nervous to venture into deeper water.

Diving
To go diving, you should go in between the month of March to September. This is when you can expect visibility of up to 30 m. As for the rest of the year, the monsoon can cause visibility to plummet to 10 m or less. Reefs in Miri are mostly shallow. Anemone reef (Scubasa Reef) is a shallow reef (6 to 9 m) covered with soft corals and anemones. During August, migrating green turtles can be found here. Sea Fan Garden lies between 15 and 20 m with many gorgonian sea fans and sea whips.
There are two famous wrecks in Miri. The Atago Maru Wreck is a second world war Japanese merchant ship and lies just off Lutong (north of Miri). The 105 m ship is sitting upright with the top deck just 9 m from the surface. Most of the hull is covered with corals. Visibility is not always good. The Sri Gadong Wreck is a small 30 m-cargo ship lying in 20 m on a sandy bottom.

Regatta
The Sarawak Regatta is a flagship event in Kuching. It is an offshoot of the Baram Regatta that was originally a contest between huge war canoes. It was held on the Baram River to settle local rivalries without resorting to war and headhunting. The excitement of those warlike, bygone days is rekindled as the State's expert boatmen take up their paddles to prove their prowess.

Angling
Malaysia waters are filled with game fish that will provide good competition. In the coastal water off Sarawak you can drop a line and wait for the strike. It could be a Sharp-Toothed Bass, Silver Jawfish, or the prized Black Marlin. For the fresh water angler, try the lakes and rivers and maybe snare a Giant Snakehead or Malaysian Mahsa. A different challenge, but equally as rewarding. Then there is 'candat' fishing. Learn from the local East Coast fishermen the art of catching cuttlefish using lights and multiple lines with hooks.

Sailing
You can bring the whole family to enjoy sailing, as it is a popular sport in Sarawak. Many resorts and hotels rent out small dinghies or catamarans and there is nothing quite so enjoyable as the wind in your hair, the sun on your skin and the water whizzing past in a profusion of bubbles as you glide across the ocean.
